Federal Tax Relief for California Storm Victims
On January 10, 2023, the Internal Revenue Service issued News Release IR-2023-03 providing tax filing and payment relief for California storm victims.
The relief postpones the 2022 individual income tax return filing deadline from April 18 to May 15, 2023. Various 2022 business returns normally due on March 15 and April 15 are also included in the relief. Farmers who forgo making estimated tax payments also have until May 15 to file.
The relief also postpones various payment deadlines that occurred as of January 8, 2023. This includes quarterly estimated tax payments normally due on January 17 and April 18, 2023. Instead, payments will be due upon filing of the 2022 return on or before May 15.
The relief is offered to individuals and households that reside or have business in any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Los Angeles, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Ventura, Yolo, and Yuba counties qualify. Other areas added later by FEMA will also qualify.
